Shelter Island Spots

Posted by Cecilia Walker on

My traveling companion extended her trip in the Hamptons and had sent texts yesterday from Shelter Island with a few photos and details on celebrity sightings from André Balazs’ Sunset Beach.  She decided this spot was one to be added to my bucket list.

Having never been, I only have a visual catalog in my head of the homes I’ve seen in the glossies.  Most recently is the home of Knoll CEO Andrew Cogan, featured in Architectural Digest’s June 2013 issue, where an existing beach cottage was retained and a more modern wing added when the neighboring house came onto the market.  The revamped architecture, by Michael Haverland, reflects a juxtaposition of old and new, as do its interiors.  Every room is occupied with pieces from Knoll‘s collections — Mies van der Rohe, Saarinen, Robert Venturi and Bertoia.  The grandest feature is a 23-foot glass wall of steel casement windows and doors.

My favorite rooms below… but, you can check out AD’s full slide show of the home here.
