Boston Magazine’s 2012 Design Home Preview

Tomorrow, October 4th, Boston Magazine’s 2012 Design Home opens for public tours over a six-week period, with proceeds benefiting the Ronald McDonald House Charities® of Eastern New England.  Boston Magazine teamed up with South Shore builder, Eugene Mattie Associates  who created a traditional Greek Revival styled home, boasting 5,000 square feet, located in Cowings Cove, a private community in Norwell, MA.  Vani Sayeed is the interior designer who coordinated with Eugene Mattie and all of the home’s sponsors on the entire project.

The setting of Cowings Cove is surrounded by 11 acres of forestry, and from every level of the rear of the home, you can see the forests’ edge.  Inside the home, a nature-inspired scheme is seen throughout and natural light pours into just about every room.

Some of the details that caught my eye…

In the kitchen, the center island is a combination of a round butcher block tabletop attached to a rectangular station topped with white marble from Gerrity Stone.  The green colors of the upholstered barstools and antique cabinetry are inspired by the outdoors.  A few of my other favorite kitchen features, are the shimmery, pearlized tile backsplash which pairs with a graphic patterned glass and marble tile mosaic behind the range.  And… I love the oversized farmhouse sink.

Very cool lighting set underneath open shelving alongside the sink.

Just off the kitchen is a sitting area and fireplace, where Elizabeth Raflowitz (Regan Communications) and I admired a pretty curved and tufted bench by Circle Furniture.

Then, just off that sitting area, is a three-season porch with glass paneled walls, and fieldstone fireplace — layered with natural textures and colors, this is one of my favorite rooms in the home.

There are a few seating areas, aside from the family and living rooms, that are scattered throughout the house.  One unexpected place, is the front entry, where standard foyer furnishings were given up for a loveseat, side table and armless chair.

For those stuck in the mindset of white subway tiled baths, there are six unique bathrooms filled with ideas for borders, and mixing patterns and materials — all furnished by Classic Tile & Stone.

Vertically laid glass mosaic, mixed with white porcelain, green hexagon ceramic tiles and granite (above).

A glimpse into some of the rooms upstairs, with details that stood out…

A great ceiling light and beautiful paintings in the Master Suite.

A great solution to placing a bed between, or in front of, windows is this upholstered bed with a high headboard by Circle Furniture, in the Girl’s Bedroom.

This hippo, from J. Todd Galleries, in the bright-colored, second-floor family room, is stunning!

Beautiful blue cabinets in the second-floor laundry room have natural stone hardware.

The best feature and my favorite room in the house is the “Mom’s Retreat,” located in the loft area which was designed by KISS 108-FM “Matty in the Morning” radio personality Lisa Donovan along with Roberta Sobran of Delicious Designs.  The space was created for moms on the go, and features a lounge, multi-purpose fitness room with Pilates studio and meditation room.

I love the pony-haired circular ottoman, the ikat rug, natural elements and bright pops of orange and pink.

An oversized painting hangs over windows that overlook the stairwell, and another series of paintings from Framing Concepts of Hingham line the catwalk that bridges the lounge to the workout space.

During yesterday’s Ribbon Cutting Ceremony, Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) of Eastern New England and Eugene Mattie presented the Friendship Home of Norwell with a generous donation.

Be sure to support RMHC and visit the Design Home!  You can find out more information and the event dates of the Speaker Series Seminars here.
