Three Million Daffodils

…at the Royal Wedding?  Quite possible, but I’m referring to another event that also takes place today.

Today marks the start of the 37th Annual Daffodil Festival on Nantucket Island.  The Nantucket Garden Club sponsored the first daffodil show in 1974, and each year since thousands of bulbs were planted in fields and roadsides all over the island.   Today an estimated three million blossoms, which have naturalized over the years, bloom on the island.

Daffodil Weekend on Nantucket is one of my favorite off-season times to visit.  The weekend-filled festival includes annual events such as a Window Decorating Contest, an Antique Car Parade, Children’s Parade, Daffy Hat Pageant, Daffy Dog Parade, a Tailgate Picnic in ‘Sconset and a Daffodil Flower show.

Erica, from The Angle of My View, has amassed a gorgeous portfolio of Nantucket photography including Daffodil Weekend.
